Family Therapy

Family and relationship difficulties are commonly understood in the scientific literature as interactional patterns rather than problems located in one individual. Stress, life transitions, parenting strain, cultural adjustment, grief, and long-term misunderstandings can shape communication in ways that gradually become repetitive: escalation, shutdown, criticism–defensiveness cycles, triangulation, or avoidance of difficult topics. Over time, these loops can affect emotional security, trust, and cooperation in the home. Family-oriented approaches therefore often focus on the system—how roles, expectations, boundaries, and communication habits influence well-being across the household.

From a Health Psychology perspective, family functioning is also closely linked to health-related outcomes, including stress physiology, sleep and recovery, emotional regulation, and coping behaviours. When family stress remains high, protective routines may break down and individual resilience can be strained. Educational, skills-based support may therefore target both the relational patterns and the everyday structures that support stability—such as clearer agreements, improved conflict repair, and more predictable routines during demanding periods.

Support for families can be offered to strengthen communication, reduce unhelpful conflict cycles, and increase mutual understanding. A structured and respectful setting can be provided in which different perspectives are heard, shared goals are clarified, and practical strategies are developed for more constructive dialogue. Evidence-informed methods may include communication skill-building, boundary-setting tools, emotion coaching, problem-solving frameworks, and guidance for navigating transitions such as parenting challenges, blended-family adjustments, relocation, separation-related stress, or changes in health and work demands. Emphasis is placed on fostering cooperation, psychological safety, and resilience within the family system.

Important note on scope

Family-focused guidance is provided as educational and coaching-based support aimed at communication skills, relationship wellbeing, and health-related coping. Where clinical family therapy, safeguarding concerns, violence, severe mental health difficulties, or formal assessment and treatment are required, evaluation and care should be sought ONLY through authorised healthcare and relevant support services in Norway.
